Procedure of the MinTU mentoring
MinTU - Mädchen in die TU Dortmund University is offered as a mentoring project for schoolgirls. The project focuses on personal contact between an experienced STEM student (mentor) and the schoolgirls (mentees). For one year, the girls engage in an intensive exchange with the student about studying a STEM subject.
The two important components that make the project so special are the workshops at TU Dortmund University and private mentoring meetings. The project is framed by large kick-off and closing events.
The MinTU year at a glance
January
The project kicks off on the TU Dortmund University campus. The mentees receive detailed information about the mentoring project. They then get to know the other girls and the mentor. MinTU is carried out as group mentoring, which means that one mentor and a maximum of six female students form a group for the entire project phase. The mentee and mentor are matched on the basis of the completed application form.
The group can discuss interests, wishes and expectations together at the kick-off meeting. Dates and topics for the mentoring meetings are also discussed.
Getting to know each other takes place undisturbed, without the presence of parents, friends, etc.
February to November
The mentoring meetings are organized by the mentor together with her mentees. Together they agree on what they would like to visit and/or discuss. The locations are freely selectable. For example, the mentor can show them the university, the student hall of residence or the university cinema. However, the group can also meet outside TU Dortmund University and visit exhibitions, experiments or other leisure activities.
At the meetings, the girls get to know each other better and get an impression of what it means to be a student.
The mentors pass on their knowledge of study conditions, procedures, content and culture as well as career opportunities to the students and give them an insight into life and learning at university. The aim is to provide more clarity about studying a STEM subject and everyday life at a university. At the same time, the mentors act as role models and can support the students' personal development and career orientation and help them decide on a course of study.
The schoolgirls attend "hands-on" workshops in the eight participating STEM departments at TU Dortmund University and gain exciting insights into study content and career opportunities. Over the course of four workshop days, the students get to know the following areas together with their mentors:
- Mathematics
- physics
- Computer Science
- Statistics
- Biological and chemical engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering and Information Technology
- Architecture and Civil Engineering
On a workshop day, the girls attend different workshops in two departments, to which they are accompanied by their mentors.
The workshops are scheduled to take place in March, June, September and November at TU Dortmund University.
Please remember this:
- In order for the visit to be approved by the school, it is important to submit an "application for leave of absence" to the school administration at least one week in advance. This application is included in the MinTU starter pack or can be downloaded from the download center.
- During the lunch break between the workshops, all MinTU mentees go to eat with their mentors in the canteen. In order to receive the student discount there, students should bring their student ID with them.
December
The information event for new prospective students is part of the closing event for the current MinTU year. The current MinTU year is brought to a close in a festive atmosphere with the closing event. Memories of the time spent together are interspersed with reports on highlights. Questions from those newly interested in MinTU are expressly encouraged and can also be addressed at the end of the event over a drink and cookie. Mentees and mentors receive a certificate of successful participation in MinTU and their parents, grandparents, siblings and friends are welcome to attend the event.
All those interested in the project are cordially invited to attend the information event. Please register for the event with the names and number of guests at mintutu-dortmundde.
