genderfluid or gender-fluid (adj.)
Genderfluid is a term from the spectrum of gender identities.
It refers to a dynamic form of gender identity that can change over time and/or depending on the context (see Queer Lexicon 2023). In contrast to static gender identities, where individuals permanently identify as male or female, for example, genderfluid people experience flexibility in their gender experience. Their gender identity can vary between different genders, including being male and female, being a mixture of the two or being non-binary (Queer Lexicon 2023).
This fluidity in gender identity does not mean feeling a constant uncertainty about one's gender, but rather an expansion of the understanding and expression of gender. Genderfluid people can choose different types of gender expression depending on how they identify at any given time. This relates to their clothing, pronouns and behaviours. Gender expression can change sometimes, frequently or very frequently and is different for each genderfluid person (Sauer 2018).
