A_sexual (abbr. ace) (adj.)/ A_Sexuality, the
Asexuality is a sexual orientation in which a person feels little or no sexual attraction or desire for other people (Sauer 2018). In contrast, people who are not asexual and desire other people sexually are referred to as allosexual (Kosiec & Kroschel 2021).
Asexuality, like other sexual orientations, is a spectrum and people can experience different degrees and types of sexual attraction or no sexual attraction at all (Regenbogenportal n.d., TAAAP n.d.).
"Society is geared towards allosexual people, for example by idealizing sexual relationships on a structural level, but also in the media and in everyday life, and presenting them as 'natural'" (Kosiec & Kroschel 2021, p. 5)
Asexual people are not automatically ⇒ aromantic. They can be interested in romantic relationships that are not sexual. As with the sexual desire of allosexual people, their romantic orientation can relate to different genders.
Asexuality is not a physical or psychological disorder or illness that needs to be cured or changed. Asexual people identify themselves as asexual and usually experience this as a permanent part of their identity. In contrast, sexual disinterest or dysfunction caused by illness can often be perceived as changes in sexual desire and thus also reduce a person's overall well-being. Asexual people do not experience their lack of interest in sexual attraction as suffering or as a personal problem. Nevertheless, a lack of recognition of asexuality and the associated discrimination can lead to suffering (Echte Vielfalt 2021).
