Statement #freedomofscience of the Fachgesellschaft Geschlechterstudien

In a statement, the Fachgesellschaft Geschlechterstudien speaks out in favor of free, autonomous and independent science and research.

On 5 February, the Fachgesellschaft Geschlechterstudien (Society for Gender Studies) published a statement in which it spoke out in favour of the freedom of research and teaching under the #freedomofscience and called for a determined response to attacks on this freedom

This was prompted by recent statements made by Alice Weidel at the AfD party conference on January 28, 2025, where she announced that a government under her leadership would close all gender studies institutions. This would be an unconstitutional and anti-democratic interference in the freedom of research and teaching, as Article 5, paragraph 3 of the German Basic Law (GG) protects academic freedom from political interference and is guaranteed as a human right worldwide.

The Fachgesellschaft Geschlechterstudien speaks out against any threats and discrediting of Gender Studies or other academic disciplines and emphasizes the importance of independent, free and autonomous science and research.

The Equal Opportunities Office of TU Dortmund University supports this statement.
