Several networks of various diversity, equality, and anti-discrimination activists have launched the campaign “”Hochschulen zeigen Haltung” (Universities Take a Stand). The aim is to send a signal for an open, supportive, and free culture of science and higher education. At the same time, the campaign aims to draw attention to the existing anti-democratic influences and attacks to which activists at universities are exposed. All TU members are invited to join the campaign.

Background to the campaign

Freedom of research and teaching is a central pillar of our democracy. Universities are places of free exchange, scientific curiosity, and critical thinking.

The rise of anti-democratic forces that call for massive interference in scientific content in their election manifestos poses an acute threat. Even parties of the “center” have already implemented anti-science measures through actions such as restricting gender-neutral language or cutting funding. In addition, researchers and students who are politically active are increasingly subject to repression. Scientific findings are being denied, researchers defamed, and universities pressured to exclude uncomfortable topics.

These developments affect all members of every university and university policy committees. Universities thrive on diversity, openness, and critical exchange. When these values are threatened, we must act together.

The campaign has been running since October 13, 2025, and is a clear statement and commitment to fundamental democratic values. It raises awareness of recent political developments and the dangers they pose to a democratic and supportive university culture. The campaign was launched by, among others, the Netzwerk Antidiskriminierung an Hochschulen (Network Against Discrimination at Universities), the Netzwerk Diversity an Hochschulen (Network for Diversity at Universities), and the Bundeskonferenz der Frauen- und Gleichstellungsbeauftragten an Hochschulen e. V. (bukof) (Federal Conference of Women's and Equal Opportunities Officers at Universities). TU Dortmund University is a member of these networks.
