Almost 200 pupils took part in TU Dortmund University's virtual Girls*Day and Boys*Day on April 22, 2021. The digital implementation enabled children nationwide to take part in TU Dortmund University's day of action.

Jill Timmreck, coordinator of Girls*Day and Boys*Day at TU Dortmund University, began the event by welcoming the girls and then the boys in the virtual Audimax. The students were then able to ask questions and take part in a survey to find out what they expected from the event. For many, it was their first Girls*Day or Boys*Day. Once all the questions had been answered, the pupils moved to different Zoom rooms to take part in their previously selected workshops.

Girls gain insights into technical and scientific departments

A total of six workshops were offered for Girls*Day. The girls were able to gain insights into various technical and scientific courses of study. From the Physics department's workshop - "From the Big Bang to MRI - the everyday life of a physicist" - to the Architecture and Civil Engineering department's workshop - "Dream houses | Representing and designing space" - everything was included.

Boys as guests in social and educational study programs

The boys were given an insight into social and educational degree courses. They were able to choose between numerous workshops, such as "Rehabilitation science - what is it actually?" or "Between Goethe, the lying press and currywurst" (Department of Cultural Studies).

In the workshops, the students were informed about what content is covered in the degree courses, how to work practically and what career opportunities there are after graduation. Particular emphasis was placed on the fact that gender plays no role in the choice of degree course and that all degree courses can be suitable for everyone, regardless of gender. In addition to guided tours and live experiments, photos and videos were shown and surveys were conducted together with the students. Questions could also be asked.

Virtual campus tour and insights into student life

After the workshops, participants had the opportunity to explore TU Dortmund University on their own using a padlet. The padlet contains information about TU Dortmund University as well as quizzes and vlogs. The click figures show that the digital implementation was very well received: TU Dortmund University's offerings were clicked on a total of 7230 times. Nevertheless, we hope that the next Girls*Day and Boys*Day will take place in person again on April 28, 2022.
