In November 2020, the Joint Science Conference (Gemeinsame Wissenschaftskonferenz, GWK) published its report on "Women in universities and non-university research institutions". The report shows that the proportion of women has increased between 2008 and 2018 in the areas of first-time enrolment, doctorates and habilitations at universities and non-university research institutions, while hardly any changes can be seen with regard to degrees. Above all, it is clear that the higher the qualification and career level, the lower the proportion of women. Only 24.7 percent of professorships at German universities and research institutions are held by women.

While the proportion of female professors at universities has risen overall, the gender gap increases with the level of the salary grade. The proportion of female W1 professors at universities is 46.6%, while only 20.5% of C4/W3 professorships are held by women. As can be seen from the GWK report entitled "Equal opportunities in science and research", there is still a great need for action in this area. Increasing the proportion of female professors is also a key area of action at TU Dortmund University. Overall, TU Dortmund University was roughly on par with the national average: just under a quarter of professorships were held by women in 2018.

The GWK reports have been published at regular intervals since 1989. The GWK is the only institution in the science system to present data on the proportion of women at all qualification levels in universities and non-university research institutions throughout Germany. The data thus serves to provide a benchmark for equality in universities and non-university research institutions and to develop data-based measures for the implementation of equal opportunities.
